Find out who made the grade over the past year in Retail Week’s annual scrutiny of the UK’s top retailers. By Retail Knowledge Bank senior partner Robert Clark
Adding Bhs to the total takes the Green family’s combined UK high street sales to more than£2.7 billion.
Ireland’s Musgrave family also has two representations in the top 20, through both Londis and Budgens. The two networks have combined retail sales of about£1.9 billion, although the Londis component comprises sales of the independently owned shops that trade under the Londis fascia. The turnover of the Londis corporate body and Budgens works out at£1 billion.
Two important new entrants in the privately owned retailer ranks are John Hargreaves’ Matalan, which was finally returned to full family control at the end of 2006 after a number of false alarms in recent years, and Peter Simon’s Monsoon, following a similarly extended series of manoeuvrings.
Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct International moved in the opposite direction. It has slipped out of the private ownership list following its flotation in 2007, although there would be little surprise if it, too, eventually reverted to its former status. Phones 4U also leaves the table after being sold by John Caudwell to private equity interests.
It is perhaps a moot point whether Dunelm should remain in the list, given its flotation in 2006, but the Adderley family retain a controlling stake. The entry would otherwise be family-owned Fenwick department store group, with sales of£341 million.
