Beneath his larger-than-life persona, Price is hugely competitive and he holds a key position in the online grocery battle.
Under his watch, Waitrose has developed its online offering Waitrose Deliver, serving customers outside the M25 from stores. But Price holds huge sway over what happens to Ocado, which Waitrose supplies with product.
Next year, as part of the renewal of its supply deal with Ocado, Waitrose will be free to sell online within the M25. With one of Ocado’s biggest selling points being that it sells Waitrose products, a move by the company to operate an online business in the capital could lead to a battle with the etailer. And Waitrose is already allowing customers in London who order online to collect from its stores.
At the same time, Waitrose is increasingly competitive against the other online grocers, offering free delivery on orders over £50, and price-matching with Tesco.com on 1,000 products.
