Executive development director, Asda

Gurr presides over Asda’s ecommerce operations, including its £500m online food sales business.

A former partner and head of the UK retail practice at consultancy firm McKinsey, Gurr plays a key part in Asda’s growth plans, laid out in April this year, which included becoming a “leader in ecommerce”.

Asda.com now covers 97% of the population and, in 2009, sales were up 40%. Gurr launched the non-food operation Asda Direct in 2008 and the online offer for clothing brand George is currently undergoing a refresh.

He also launched Take Home Today, a new development where customers can order and purchase from a supercentre range of products at their local store, regardless of the size. The format is being trialled in Bradford and is expected to be rolled out.

He is also overseeing the roll-out of its click and collect service, plus its financial services business.

Online is also a key part of Asda’s ambition to become number one in non-food, although Gurr still has a way to go to catch up with the mighty Tesco’s online operation.

Prior to Asda, Gurr spent five years as chief executive at Blueheath, the internet enabled stockless wholesaler he founded in 2001.
