The spirit of Christmas was certainly on display on Friday at new London shopping centre One New Change, when four robbers targeting a jewellery store faced the ire of the City’s late-night shoppers.

Retail Week’s Joanna Perry witnessed the incident, which had seen four robbers, on two motorbikes, drive into the centre; with two entering the store carrying a sledgehammer.

Only things didn’t go quite to plan, as passers-by held the doors of the store closed while others called the police. After trying to smash their way out of the shop, eventually the robbers escaped from the store as their accomplices circled the centre on their motorbikes.

Two got away, but as the others attempted to drive off, they were pulled from their motorcycle by members of the public and many other shoppers rushed to assist to unmask them and keep them pinned to the ground.

The entire shopping centre then erupted into a round of applause; all terribly British. Two suspects remained in custody on Saturday according to The City Of London police.

And the moral of this little Christmas tale… Politicians and police officers may not take thefts from stores as seriously as some in the industry would like, but shoppers are firmly on the side of retailers.
