But the array of retailers that have come together to demand monthly payment of rents certainly demands attention.
We’ve been here before. Kingfisher and DSGi in particular have been vociferous on this subject and the BRC launched a campaign two years ago, but struggled to whip up real support from the industry.
What’s interesting this time around is that it’s not just the usual suspects jumping on board, but others such as Sir Philip Green, who is not a BRC member and tends to take a sceptical view of pan-industry lobbying initiatives.
On the one hand, it has to be a good thing that retailers are coming together to lobby on issues that affect them. The ultra-competitive nature of retailing is almost always a good thing, but it can mean that causes that unite the industry are lost because often other industries, such as commercial landlords, are more willing to speak with one voice.
