Facebook check-ins could prove valuable for retailers wanting to deliver relevant deals to customers visiting stores, but as yet no one has found a way to capitalise on this activity. US ad agency Red Pepper is working on a concept that could change that.
It is developing Facedeals, an innovative app that enables customers to check-in to shops and restaurants using their face.
The technology works via facial recognition cameras installed at businesses. The cameras scan customers’ faces and, using customers’ Facebook photo tags, map the physical appearance of the face. Customers would be checked-in and receive a customised deal via their smartphone, based on their Facebook ‘Like’ history.
The concept would enable retailers to match customers with relevant offers and gather data. The question is whether shoppers would buy into this - the public is becoming increasingly privacy conscious. The exception is teenagers, who have embraced sharing their movements with their social groups.
