Last week, Christmas shoppers in Bloomingdale’s flagship New York store were able to virtually try on Tacori jewellery using augmented reality technology.

Augmented reality works by superimposing computer generated images onto the physical environment. Here the technology, built by UK company Holition, lets customers see what products will look like on, without having to wait at the counter for store staff to help them try on the items.

Customers can move around to see the products from different angles. The technology includes a built-in sharing function, so customers can take photos of themselves virtually wearing items and share the photo via email, Facebook and Twitter. The brand hoped these photos would act as a hint for Christmas presents.

Holition chief executive Jonathan Chippindale said: “Our technology is challenging and pushing the boundaries of the luxury sector by making it available and accessible to all.”
