What was your first job in retailing?
Selling plimsolls at the age of seven.
I got them at a jumble sale for free after it shut, then sold them for a shilling. 100% profit.
Who have you learnt most from in your retail career?
Sir Philip Green. He’s a massive inspiration - reading, listening and watching what he does.
Which retail company do you admire most and why?
Tesco. I love the speed with which it analyses and takes the opportunity.
What keeps you awake at night?
When I’m excited and hungry about the things I’ll be doing the next day. Also when I’ve had too much to drink.
What advice would you give someone starting out in retail?
1.You’ve got to want to do it. 2. You’ve got to want to do it. 3. You’ve got to want to do it.
What job would you have done if you hadn’t become a retailer?
An actor.
What’s your proudest achievement?
Showing my late mum around the first store in Plymouth.
What is the trait you least like in yourself and why?
I honestly can’t think of one.
What’s the most satisfying part of your job?
Cutting the ribbons in new stores and thanking everybody who has made it possible. Watching projects increase in turnover and profit.
What’s your favourite shop?
Neiman Marcus in New York.
What was your last purchase?
