This store has been open for nearly 10 months and every annual event brings with it a chance to learn about the trading environment and our colleagues.
The Easter holiday was so early this year that customers were left scratching their heads as to why it was not a tad warmer. And so, with the two May bank holidays fast approaching, we have chosen this week instead to launch our Outdoor Shop, which displays barbecues, garden furniture and toys. We’re crossing our fingers and hoping that better weather is around the corner.
Being a town centre store, we took a decision to challenge anyone who looks under 25 who is trying to buy alcohol. We also restrict sales of alcohol between 12am and 6am and these initiatives have been well-received by the community.
All managers and colleagues have been fully trained to ensure 100 per cent compliance with the scheme. I believe it’s important that we play our part in improving the local environment.
Staff are central to the success of this and every other initiative, so last week I hosted a celebration breakfast to reward them for their outstanding customer service.
A colleague can be nominated by customers or other staff members for going beyond the call of duty. A recent highlight for me was when one of my greeters received the shining star award for helping disabled and elderly customers.
This is a part of my role I really enjoy and it makes me proud when I see the pile of nominations each month.
