John Lewis Partnership today revealed a 10.9% tumble in full-year pre-tax profits to £305.5m, while sales edged up 0.5%.
Here we look at the key numbers for its grocery and department store businesses:
Waitrose
• Operating profits before exceptionals slipped 2% to £232.6m
• Sales fell 0.8% to £6.1bn
• Like-for-likes slipped 1.3%
• On average, 220,000 more customer transactions a week, year on year
• Grocery market share was flat at 5.5% (based on Kantar figures)
• Hospitality sales – including cafes, wine bars, juice bars, bakeries, sushi bars – were up 20%
• Foreign currency click-and-collect now available in 300 branches
• Dry cleaning service in 148 stores
• Online sales fell 2.9%. First-half sales fell 13%, but second-half sales were up 8.3%.
• 70% of all click-and-collect John Lewis orders picked up at Waitrose stores, up 19%
• MyWaitrose loyalty cardholders total 6 million. 70% of Waitrose sales are to cardholders.
• Pick Your Own Offers scheme now has “well over” a million customers
• Twelve new stores opened in the year – 10 supermarkets and two Little Waitrose stores
• Waitrose products now exported to 58 countries. Sales in Bermuda up 47%, in Malta up 70%.
John Lewis
• Operating profits before exceptionals flat at £250.2m
• Sales up 2.7% to £3.7bn
• Like-for-likes up 3.1%
• Stores contributed 67% to sales, while online 33%
• Store sales fell 1%
• Online sales jumped 17.3%
• Click-and-collect orders up 11%; accounting for 53% of all online orders
• Sales through mobile devices up 34%, through smartphones up 86%
• Fashion sales up 6.2%. Menswear rose 8.8%; womenswear 6.5%
• Home products sales up 4.1%
• Electricals and home technology revenue rose 3%
• My John Lewis loyalty card scheme boosted members by 32% to 1.8 million customers
• John Lewis Financial Services commissions grew by 22%
• Two new stores due to open this year in Leeds and Chelmsford; plus, two new distribution centres in Milton Keynes.
Staff at the partnership will get a 10% bonus, down from the 11% paid last year.
