Managing director, High & Mighty

What was your first job in retailing?

Working on the tills at my local supermarket in Culcheth near Warrington while still at school.

Which retail company do you admire most and why?

Probably John Lewis as it has managed to establish itself as

a premium multichannel retailer with outstanding service and quality products.

What is the trait you least like in yourself and why?

I expect all of the team to work at the same speed as myself.

Who have you learnt most from in your retail career?

The buying disciplines learnt at the start of my career were down to the no-nonsense approach of Gerry Cook who was at the time my buying director at JD Williams.

What advice would you give someone starting out in retail?

If you don’t love the job then change direction as retail is all about commitment and having passion about what you do.

What keeps you awake at night?

Thinking about all the things that could make High & Mighty the number one destination retailer for people who want fashion that really fits no matter what the size.

What’s the most satisfying part of your job?

Bringing quality menswear to people who struggle to get clothes that make them look good. By having great service with a willingness to go the extra mile, customers can leave knowing they have the best.

What’s your proudest achievement?

Launching the online brand Oli in 2007. Tight timescales and overstretched teams still delivered a brand that represented fashion at its best.

What job would you have done if you hadn’t become a retailer?

I would be in HR as I love the people side of management.

What’s your favourite shop and why?

John Lewis in Cheadle. The store is inspirational and aspirational.

What was your last purchase?

A bag from Ted Baker. It was a mix of fashion and quality.
