A new book by John Lewis Partnership technical strategy manager Gary Hird helps managers cut through all the industry greenwash and pick out what is important within the mass of information published on green IT.

A tip-off to Retail Week recently highlighted the publishing success of one of the retail technology community’s very own.

Well done to John Lewis Partnership technical strategy manager Gary Hird, who saw his book of advice on green computing - Green IT in Practice - published by IT Governance in early September.

The title has been taken up by another retail giant, Amazon, and is now available for all to purchase on its site.

In the book, Hird talks readers through John Lewis’ own experience of implementing a green IT programme during 2007 and the first half of 2008. He has been responsible for green IT initiatives at both John Lewis and Waitrose; and Retail Week has written previously of Hird’s work in this area including a server virtualisation programme and challenging its IT suppliers on their own green credentials.

The book offers advice to help managers cut through all the industry greenwash and pick out what is important within the mass of information published on green IT.

And this isn’t the only recognition of the hard work that Hird has put in, in the past couple of years promoting the role that the IT department can play within business.

He is also on the shortlist for the Intel IT leader of the year category at this year’s British Computer Society Awards.

It is great to see IT staff within retail recognised for their knowledge and hard work. So good luck to Gary with both the book and winning the gong.
