The Co-op’s latest store model is designed to appeal to customers shopping for their main evening meal and features an increased food-to-go offer.

The pictures show the store in Shoreditch, London, which opened at the weekend. It is one of 13 “generation two” Fresh Format pilot stores that have been opened so far.

The stores feature new branding and signage, an improved bakery offer and a stand called ‘Make a Meal of it’ which groups products together to suggest evening meals.

Co-op head of retail Steve Murrells told Retail Week earlier this month that the second generation Fresh Format stores are “all enjoying double digit like-for-like growth” and the Co-op hopes to rework 1,000 of its 3,000 shops in 2014.

The Shoreditch shop neighbours one of Argos’ trial digital stores on Old Street roundabout.

The Co-op reported like-for-like sales in the 13 weeks to January 4 rose 1% fuelled by strong convenience store sales, which rose 3.2%.
