Retailers are hoping Halloween is more treat than trick this year as they aim to capture a slice of spooky sales.

Research from retail and shopper creative agency Live & Breathe has found that six out of 10 consumers and over three-quarters of 18-24 year olds now celebrate Halloween.

Verdict predicted that shoppers will be turning to supermarkets and value players for their Halloween merchandise. Almost two-thirds of those surveyed said they will spend on food to celebrate Halloween - now the most celebrated holiday behind Christmas and Easter.

More than 20% of consumers will buy a pumpkin, said Verdict.

Last year, YouGov research suggested British consumers would spend as much as £650m on Bonfire Night and Halloween.
