Waitrose today opened a new 18,000 sq ft supermarket in Greenwich as its assault on the London market gathers pace.
The new store features a concierge service to provide customers with extra services including finding specific products as well as the latest iteration of its self-scan tills which do not take cash.
Managing director Mark Price said the upmarket grocer has identified 60-80 locations in the capital where the retailer could use its Little Waitrose convenience format to access the lucrative London market in future.
He added that the company is targeting opening 300 stores, including 200 convenience stores over the next decade.
Price said: “We have more convenience shops coming in London next year and that will ramp up over the next decade.”
