The discount retailer has launched a “first of its kind” Corner Store small-format shop in Sydney, Australia, showcasing Aldi’s offerings in a new urban setting.
Aldi’s Director of the Corner Store project Huw Longman said: “Aldi is proud to present an elevated, never-before-seen, convenience-driven store format that is both uniquely different and recognizably Aldi.”
The retailer said the new store format’s design, created by Landini Associates, is tailored to city dwellers.
“The new Corner Store layout is aligned to the needs of a local, largely walk-in customer base, with simple navigation, self-checkouts, fresh offerings, quality products and everyday low prices with a nostalgic neighborhood feel.”
The new design is also intended for the refurbishment of centrally located existing buildings, removing the need to construct new larger properties.
The concept focuses on grocery and fresh produce, with the addition of ready-to-go meals and convenience products. The store will also offer takeaway coffee and an artisanal bakery.
Aldi’s traditional Special Buys weekly deals will also be available for customers in the corner store.
Each corner store’s design will be heavily influenced by the community in which it is located. Aldi aims to bring this personalised design concept through building partnerships with local artists to decorate the smaller store formats. In the Sydney corner store, Aldi partnered with Sydney artist Mulga to decorate both the interior and the facade of the retailer’s newest store.
Sustainability plays a role in the creation of the smaller store layout. The store is built using sustainable materials including pale brick, white tiles, blockwork, terrazzo, black steel and galvanised steel mesh, timber palettes, oak, and walnut. The store is powered by 100% renewable electricity.
Retail workers in the store will also have new staff uniforms designed specifically for them. The t-shirts each bear a lighthearted slogan or image related to the discount retailer’s offerings.
Landini associate graphic design director Ben Goss said: “In collaboration with the Aldi team, we’ve created a new brand based on the importance of community and that celebrates food, people and place.”
“With a combination of playful mural art and simple and direct graphic communications, the Aldi Corner Store experience is all about making the customer smile during their shopping journey.”
