Søstrene Grene will open its first UK store at Intu Victoria Centre in Nottingham this month. Retail Week takes a look at the retailer.
Søstrene Grene
• Søstrene Grene was founded in Aarhus, Denmark in 1973 by sisters Anna and Clara Grene. The retailer’s name translates into English as ‘Sisters Grene’.
• Its stores sell lifestyle and homeware products, including kitchenware, interior furnishings, home accessories, stationery, children’s toys, gifts, crafts and gift wrapping
• Since 1989, the business has embarked on an expansion strategy in Europe using a largely franchise model, opening stores in Spain, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Iceland and Ireland. It also has a presence in Japan.
• Last year, Søstrene Grene broke through the 100-store barrier
• Boss Mikkel Grene has gone on record with his desire to target Germany as another market for expansion, where he believes there is room for 200 stores
• Søstrene Grene opened its first Irish store on Dún Laoghaire’s George Street last December
• During the 2015 financial year, Søstrene Grene’s holding company, SG Holding, posted record profits of DKr34.5m (£3.65m), which represented a 53% uplift on 2014’s DKr22.5m (£2.38m) kroner
• The retailer’s revenue is expected to top DKr1bn (£106m) in the current financial year
• Søstrene Grene boss Grene believes much of its success is down to its popularity on social media. The retailer has almost 9,000 YouTube subscribers, 272,760 Instagram followers and 543,830 ‘likes’ on its Facebook page.
