Ray Kelvin CBE, founder and chief executive of Ted Baker, won the Outstanding Contribution to Retail Award at the prestigious Oracle Retail Week Awards 2014 last night.
At a glittering ceremony at Grosvenor House Hotel, Kelvin was presented with the award by colleague and friend Andrew Jennings, former chief executive of German department store chain Karstadt, and Ted Baker finance director Lindsay Page.
Kelvin founded Ted Baker in 1988 and has achieved tremendous success, taking it public in 1997 and continuing to outperform the competitive fashion sector despite the tough climate.
Famously media-shy, Kelvin did not want to be photographed at the ceremony.
The Oracle Retailer of the Year award was scooped by discount retailer Aldi. The fast-growing retailer has been the star of the food sector over the past year, giving the big four grocers a run for their money.
The Clarity Retail Leader of the Year was awarded to Asos co-founder and chief executive Nick Robertson. Robertson has had a great year, maintaining the etail fashion giant’s lead in a competitive market and building the brand globally, launching in markets such as China and Russia.
Other winners included Tesco, Asda, John Lewis and Ao.com.
