Online retailer eBay has updated its fashion-focused iPhone app to include a new colour swatch search function.

The app features ‘Image Swatch’ technology that allows customers to find fashion items on eBay.co.uk that match the colour and pattern of images in photographs. Customers take a photo of something they like the colour of, upload it to the app and the technology searches for matching items that correspond to the pattern and colour.

This is an unusual feature that taps into the eBay customer mentality; customers are more likely to spend time and effort curating a wardrobe that suits their style, using a mix of vintage, secondhand and branded clothing. While this might not be the most effective way of searching for items, it does provide an engaging experience and highlights a more diverse selection of products.

EBay has also created a new app specifically for iPads. This app features a customisable homepage that allows for a more personalised shopping experience.
