Lidl can discount very effectively due to the buying power it achieves across its limited ranges and through its no-frills operation, which minimises costs. Both Aldi and Lidl have benefited in recent periods from the ‘two nations’ phenomenon, whereby more promiscuous, value-conscious UK consumers are spreading out their shops between various retailers, to the benefit of the upper and lower ends of the market.
