Online marketplace eBay has launched a new generative AI video tool to turn listing images into short-form videos that can be shared on social platforms.

The tool has been described as “fast and effortless” as it intuitively enables sellers on eBay to create “professional quality videos”.

AI creates the videos from existing listing images, which can then be customised and shared directly to platforms such as TikTok and YouTube.

The tool is available to US sellers and can be accessed directly from the seller hub. Videos are created in just a few simple steps.

Why does it matter?

The new tool is a follow-up from the marketplace’s social caption generator tool that it launched in 2023.

It said it understands how powerful social media is for “driving visibility and growing brands” and it saw an opportunity to create something to help promote listings through video.

The AI-enabled tool means video editing skills or equipment is not required, making it quick and easy for sellers to upload content.

While only available for US sellers currently, eBay said it is committed to expanding its capabilities to help sellers reach more buyers on a range of platforms.

“In the future, we plan to expand this tool to additional platforms. Our goal is to provide even greater opportunities for sellers to drive more visibility, engage new audiences, and expand their brand across social platforms,” eBay said in a blog post.

Strategic implications 

eBay is tapping into trends of selling and promoting listings via social media, allowing sellers to go through various platforms to engage with a bigger audience.

The simple-to-use video tool is also accessible and a popular way to promote listings.

Video listings are expected to “increase visibility, expand buyer engagement, and help build brand presence across multiple channels.”
