Innovation of the Week is a series highlighting retail initiatives that have caught the eye of our team. Every week, we bring you new ideas and case studies across consumer, technology, sustainability, economy, policy and industry.
What is it?
Ecommerce giant Shopify has unveiled a raft of new innovations as part of its summer products and innovations showcase, as it continues on its bid to enhance the online shopping experience.
As part of the newest edition, which it has called ‘Horizons’, Shopify has announced the rollout of a new generative artificial intelligence (AI) feature that allows merchants to set up storefronts by a single prompt.
The new ‘AI store builder’ can generate three store layouts by entering descriptive keywords, complete with images and text, reducing the time and effort required by brands to design their store’s website.
As part of the update, Shopify has also resigned its POS app and has expanded its Shopify Payments offering to 15 new European countries.
Shopify has also upgraded its commerce AI assistant tool Sidekick to now include voice chat, screen sharing and image generation capabilities.
Why does it matter?
The latest products and innovations at Shopify are extremely significant for the future of retail and changing consumer habits in what the platform calls a “difficult UK economy” as they allow retailers and brands to work “smarter not harder”.
“In today’s climate, where markets are becoming even more dynamic as a result of consumers’ preferences, technologies and regulations constantly shifting, innovation in commerce is vital,” said Shopify managing director for EMEA Deann Evans.
“To stay ahead and drive loyalty and sales, merchants need the right tools to be able to respond quickly and pivot if needed. Every Edition lays the foundations to make Shopify even better for merchants and developers. This time, our brand new Horizons theme, built with and on AI, is just part of the over 150 product highlights we’re showcasing this time, so merchants, big or small, who rely on us can work smarter, not harder.”
“We’re literally helping them set new horizons for their business”
Shopify’s ongoing innovations show a dedication to being a partner to retailers and brands alike to make the day-to-day tasks easier, while also facilitating future growth and advancements in its operations.
Evans added: “Businesses don’t necessarily have the time or resources to iterate and innovate, so they depend on Shopify to not only help them run the day-to-day, but to be the partner that removes the barriers and opens up opportunities to grow.
“This Horizon Edition spans every facet of the online and in-store retail experience, so these leaders of commerce can focus on expansion rather than admin. We’re literally helping them set new horizons for their business.”
Strategic implications
Shopify’s newest edition is likely to win over brands and retailers looking for a partner that offers support and innovation to make operations easier. It also opens up growth opportunities for retailers and allows them to keep up with competitors by utilising the newest developments.
