Group commercial director, Carpetright

What was your first job in retailing?

My first job was assistant buyer in Hamleys. It was the sort of job where you had to touch, feel and use the products to ensure they were right for the customer.

Which retail company do you admire most and why?

Selfridges would top my list as the most improved retailing experience over the last few years. Everything it does is done very well.

What is the trait you least like in yourself and why?

I’ve got a fantastic memory for faces but alas, not for names, which can be frustrating.

Who have you learnt most from in your retail career?

Textile manufacturer and co-founder of Coats Viyella, Sir Harry Djanogly. He taught me to consider things from all sides.

What advice would you give someone starting out in retail?

Love your product and be prepared to work hard. Retail isn’t a 9 to 5.

What keeps you awake at night?

Being a keen sailor, I’ve seen first-hand what effect pollution has on both our environment and our wildlife.

What’s your proudest achievement?

My proudest moment at Carpetright involved the transfer of our European headquarters to our current site. It was a real team effort.

What’s the most satisfying part of your job?

Being in a position where I can influence things I believe in and see them come to fruition.

What job would you have done if you hadn’t become a retailer?

Either a marine biologist or building or designing boats.

What’s your favourite shop and why?

Monmouth Coffee shop. Not an obvious choice but they make a great cup of coffee, sourcing beans from around the world in both an ethical and sustainable manner. It offers great products and advice, always helpful.

What was your last purchase?

A dress for my daughter.
