Sam Husain, Chief executive of Foyles, tells Retail Week about his life working in retail.

What was your first job in retailing?

Foyles. The chairman, Christopher Foyle, thought he would like someone from outside the industry to run the business so here I am, just entering my fifth year.

Which retail company do you admire most and why?

John Lewis. The service is excellent, it cares about its staff and it is continuously looking for improvements.

What is the trait you least like in yourself and why?

Probably an obsession with dealing immediately with email correspondence.

Who have you learnt most from in your retail career?

My management team at Foyles. They have compatible skills, an almost insatiable passion for books and bookselling, have creative ideas and are keen to promote and develop the business.

What advice would you give someone starting out in retail?

You need to know your customer and have a thorough understanding of the operating costs of the business, metrics and key drivers.

What keeps you awake at night?

In the last year, dealing with an expanding business and balancing this with an active involvement with my golf club as captain.

What’s the most satisfying part of your job?

Working with people who are absolutely passionate about the bookselling business.

What’s your proudest achievement?

At Foyles, achieving a turnaround in profitability after many years.

What job would you have done if you hadn’t become a retailer?

Probably a financial role in a service industry.

What’s your favourite shop and why?

PC World in Staples Corner, north London, as I like to look at the latest developments in computers and electronics.

What was your last purchase?

The latest iPad, which I use mostly for email and watching some football matches.
