The national minimum wage for adult workers will rise to £6.70 from today in a move that will hand a pay rise to more than one million people.

The 3% increase in the hourly rate from £6.20 per hour is the biggest real increase in the national minimum wage since 2006, the government said.

It means that a full-time employee working 40 hours per week will see the largest cash increase in their annual pay packets since 2008.

Meanwhile apprentices will say their minimum hourly pay increase by 57p per hour to £3.30.

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills said the boost for apprentices is the “largest ever”. It said apprentices working 40 hours per week would earn an extra £1,185 each year.

The hourly rate for 18 to 20 year olds will increase 17p to £5.30, while 16 and 17 year olds will now be paid a minimum of £3.87 per hour.

Business Secretary Sajid Javid said: “As a one nation government, we are making sure that every part of Britain benefits from our growing economy and today more than 1.4 million of Britain’s lowest-paid workers will be getting a well-deserved pay rise.”
