The grocers’ multichannel efforts shifted up a gear in 2013. Here are some of the main developments:

Asda and Tesco both rolled out drive-thru click and collect

  • Morrisons unveiled its tie-up with Ocado to launch online.
  • In January, respected multichannel retailer Robin Terrell arrived at Tesco.
  • In September, Tesco poached John Lewis’ head of omnichannel development Karen Dracou.
  • In October, Tesco opened its fourth-generation dotcom centre in Erith to serve east London, Croydon and northwest Kent.
  • In November, Tesco began a same-day delivery pilot for
  • online grocery. Asda is also looking at the service.
  • Both Tesco and Asda extended their drive-thru click-and-collect to more stores.
  • In November, Asda unveiled a new service allowing shoppers to pay in store with cash for online orders.
  • Asda rolled out in-store transactional kiosks and collection lockers and also piloted collections from Tube stations.
  • Waitrose introduced a trial of click-and-collect lockers in July, as well as click-and-collect drive-thru.
  • In October, Sainsbury’s revealed plans to open its first dark store. It also expanded its trial of scan-and-go in August.
  • Iceland returned to online grocery for the first time since 2005.
  • In November the Co-op took its first steps towards online trading as it began a trial of click-and-collect grocery in Stockport.
