Nick Wilkinson, Chief executive, Evans Cycles.
What was your first job in retailing?
A summer job aged 17 at the London Map Centre.
Which retail company do you admire most and why?
Mountain Equipment Co-op in Canada. It’s committed to sustainability and community and still offers the best range, value and service.
What is the trait you least like in yourself and why?
Impatience. I’m not good at waiting in queues, or hearing poor excuses about why an important project is delayed.
What advice would you give someone starting out in retail?
Retailing is simple, provided you sell what you buy. Get real hands-on experience in buying and selling as you progress in your career.
Who have you learnt most from in your retail career?
Stanley Kalms, the founder of Dixons. He taught me that common sense and bravery are more important to success in retail than anything else.
What keeps you awake at night?
Sales can be a worry - as much when it’s going well and you worry about it stopping.
What’s the most satisfying part of your job?
Working with people who are passionate about what they do. Evans Cycles has a great environment because our colleagues are into cycling and want everyone to share their passion.
What’s your proudest achievement?
Growing market share is the true test of whether customers appreciate your work. In Maxeda DIY in the Netherlands and Belgium, we grew market share consistently year after year.
What job would you have done if you hadn’t become a retailer?
When I was at school, I fancied being an architect.
What’s your favourite shop and why?
I’m really into Muji’s stores at the moment. They offer a great combination of style and value.
What was your last purchase?
A dog bed bought at Pets at Home. The dog chose it from dozens on display.
