Job listings website Indeed revealed this year’s list of the best retailers to work for in the UK, with Wren Kitchens topping the list for the second year in a row.
The kitchen manufacturer was rated the best retail employer to work for due to its salary, benefits and workplace culture. It was also praised for its job advancement and managers “who allow their teams to flourish”.
Wren Kitchens knocked John Lewis off the top spot in 2019 and the department store chain has since plummeted down to 11th place.
Lush Cosmetics also dropped down to third on the list, with newcomer Whole Foods Market coming in second.
Other new additions to the list for 2020 include HMV, Selfridges, The Perfume Shop, Sofology and The Body Shop.
Top-scoring retailers offered a good work-life balance, job security and advancement opportunities, a supportive and open culture, and ample salary and benefits.

Based on thousands of staff reviews left on Indeed, the ranking is created using an algorithm that evaluates a number of factors such as average rating, number of reviews and the history of job openings.
UK managing director at Indeed Bill Richards said: “Retailers have experienced some difficult times over the past few years, but our list is testament to those who, despite the challenges, continue to prioritise a positive working environment.
“HMV’s rise through the rankings shows it is possible for high street stores to turn their fortunes around and earn the appreciation of their staff in the process.
“The companies on our list have successfully created a culture which inspires loyalty from their staff, through encouraging employees to progress and offering a good work-life balance. This is of particular importance now, as record employment levels mean companies need to fight hard to find and retain good staff.
“Our research has shown how 70% of job-seekers rank a company’s reputation as an employer to be important while considering a job opportunity. The reputation of a company, which can be easily scrutinised through online reviews, has never been more important when it comes to attracting talent.”
