Michael Sacher Chief executive, Mungo & Maud
What was your first job in retailing?
Management trainee at Marks & Spencer.
Which retail company do you admire most and why?
Neiman Marcus truly understands luxury retailing and it is always a pleasure to visit its stores. They are welcoming and always consistent in the quality of presentation and customer service.
What is the trait you least like in yourself and why?
I probably tend to micromanage too much when I should delegate more effectively.
Who have you learnt most from in your retail career?
I learnt an enormous amount from my father who was managing director of Marks & Spencer, a business that was founded by my great grandfather. I used to visit stores with him at the weekend. He lived and breathed M&S.
What advice would you give someone starting out in retail?
It’s never dull. With creativity and flair you can create whatever you want, so go for it.
What keeps you awake at night?
Luckily I have no trouble sleeping. It’s a huge blessing.
What’s the most satisfying part of your job?
Hearing from our customers that they love what we do.
What’s your proudest achievement?
Helping build up Mungo & Maud from when it was no more than just a sheet of paper, with my creative wife Nicola and brother-in-law Jonathan.
What job would you have done if you hadn’t become a retailer?
Years ago I did a psychometric test that indicated that my personal profile correlated most closely to that of a brain surgeon.
What’s your favourite shop and why?
I love visiting the Apple Store wherever I am to see what’s new. It’s techno heaven.
What was your last purchase?
A pair of John Lobb shoes. I had thought that only my wife could spend so much on a pair of shoes.
