Lysa Hardy, Chief marketing officer at NBTY Europe, owner of Holland & Barrett, speaks to Retail Week about her life working in retail.

Lysa Hardy

What was your first job in retailing?

I ran a market stall from the age of 14 to 18 selling shoes.

What is the trait you least like in yourself and why?

I always want to please. I wish I could care less what others think.

What’s the most satisfying part of your job?

Seeing people engage and be motivated, whether it’s an employee, a colleague or a customer.

Who have you learnt most from in your retail career?

I learn from everyone - either how to do things better or how not to do them. I adored working for Srini Gopalan at T-Mobile, Tom Alexander at EE and Rob Templeman and Chris Woodhouse at RAC - all geniuses.

Which retail company do you admire most and why?

I know it’s obvious, but John Lewis. I have always been a fan of its approach - it’s simple but effective.

What advice would you give someone starting out in retail?

Don’t over-complicate, keep the customer at the heart and be obsessive about numbers.

What job would you have done if you hadn’t become a retailer?

A chef - still hope to someday.

What keeps you awake at night?

My two year old. And a head full of ideas.

What’s your proudest achievement?

Having the bravery to do the T-mobile Dance campaign, and fighting to keep the idea pure.

What’s your favourite shop and why?

Eataly, an Italian deli/restaurant/grocery store/bar in Manhattan. It’s a riot of smell, sound, taste and fabulous food.

What was your last purchase?

Pink studded Converse boots.
