Heathrow Airport retail director Max Vialou-Clark speaks to Retail Week about his life in retail.

What was your first job in retailing?

I started with Aldi on its graduate training scheme as a district manager. It was hard work but well paid and really great fun.

Which retail company do you admire most and why?

Of those that I’ve worked with I’d have to say Sainsbury’s, by a long way. They have a clear purpose, real values and they love their products.

What is the trait you least like in yourself?

Impatience.

Who have you learnt most from in your retail career?

My first boss at Aldi - he was a real slave-driver but he taught me how to work hard.

What advice would you give someone starting out in retail?

Learn to love the shopfloor, get to know your products and keep pushing your new ideas.

What keeps you awake at night?

Not having enough in the pipeline. All companies and all leaders need a steady stream of innovation and stretching plans.

What’s the most satisfying part of your job?

I love to encourage people to experiment. I get great satisfaction from watching and helping people bring their ideas to life.

What’s your proudest achievement?

It’s a bit of a cliché, but I’m lucky to have three great kids that still think I’m right, occasionally.

What job would you have done if you hadn’t become a retailer?

If I had the talent I’d have loved to have been a golfer. But I didn’t, so I’d probably have to say a ‘city suit’.

What’s your favourite shop and why?

Cycle Surgery. It is full of great products and passionate people, and it’s a boys’ toy shop.

What was your last purchase?

A good suit from Hugo Boss.
