David Bateman, chief financial and operating officer at Paperchase, speaks to Retail Week about his life working in retail.
What was your first job in retailing?
Management accountant responsible for central costs in Andy Higginson’s finance team at Laura Ashley.
Which retail company do you admire most and why?
Selfridges, the retail experience is the best.
What is the trait you least like in yourself and why?
Limited patience. The wish to get everything done today, although I think I’m extending my timelines the older I get.
Who have you learnt most from in your retail career?
Hilary Riva and Frances Russell taught me that B&M disciplines are at the heart of successful retailing. Also Darren Shapland, who has proved that nice guys can make it to the top.
What advice would you give someone starting out in retail?
Get involved with a brand that has appeal, is managed by respected individuals and puts customer service at the top of its agenda, then it’s a numbers game.
What keeps you awake at night?
Risk and opportunity management for our business.
What’s the most satisfying part of your job?
Being involved strategically and operationally with a UK-based retail brand that continues to expand its horizons, both creatively and geographically.
What’s your proudest achievement?
Although outside retail, persuading my two sons to support AFC Wimbledon despite the existence of the media-hyped Premiership. They’re living the dream.
What job would you have done if you hadn’t become a retailer?
I’d have probably stayed in oil and gas, the industry I joined after graduation.
What’s your favourite shop and why?
Fordham Sports in London, the store for cricket equipment.
What was your last purchase?
Back-to-school stationery to keep my daughter happy.
