What a year for SuperGroup founder. The man who set up Superdry on a market stall was the darling of the City as his company’s shares trebled in value following last year’s IPO. It was a phenomenal rise from obscurity.
As the year went on, signs of naivety when it came to dealing with the City cost the company dear as the shares came crashing back down to earth over concerns about supply of stock and more profound anxieties about brand longevity.
SuperGroup divides opinion in the retail world, but whichever camp you’re in, there’s no denying that Julian Dunkerton has emerged as one of the leading influencers in UK fashion today. Superdry hoodies and T-shirts are everywhere, and its distinctive products have spawned a flood of imitations.
It may have been a roller-coaster year, and some will fear the peak has passed, but nevertheless Dunkerton’s success is a tribute to great retail entrepreneurialism.
