With another successful Christmas under his belt, Matalan was able to raise £525m earlier this year, with strong demand from investors. John Hargreaves, who installed McGeorge in the position, should certainly be happy with the £250m dividend he was presented with.

Time will tell whether McGeorge’s next action will be to oversee a sale of the business.
