Chief executive, Morrisons

Philips swoops into the Power List this year, having been appointed chief executive of the UK’s fourth largest grocer.

Almost unknown over here, Philips was previously at Canadian grocer Loblaw where he was schooled by former Asda boss Allan Leighton.

All eyes will be on Philips in September when he unveils his thoughts on Morrisons’ strategy of to the City. While he is so far keeping a low profile, it is understood he is making a good impression on suppliers and store teams and is regarded as a skilled operator.

Irishman Philips takes over at a difficult time. Like all the grocers, like-for-like sales have slowed this year as inflation has risen. Morrisons is still positive - though only just - recently reporting a like-for-likes increase of 0.8%.

However, Philips has some big decisions to make. Morrisons has carved a niche for itself with its ‘fresh and value’ mantra, but it is way behind the pack in non-food, and does not yet have an online shopping offer. It also does not operate in the convenience sector at the moment, meaning its rivals are steaming ahead in the space race.
