Chief executive, DSGi

Browett, boss of electricals group DSGi, has accomplished what many people thought impossible. He has moved the retailer, owner of the Currys and PC World chains, away from a ferociously aggressive trading mentality and instigated a service culture, which has proven its worth by delivering better performance.

Stores have been overhauled and new formats, such as megastores and two-in-one Currys and PC World shops, have put sales and profits on an upward trend.

The upshot is that when US giant Best Buy made its UK debut in April, it faced a competitor primed and ready for the fight, rather than one demoralised and short of ammo.

The cerebral Browett apparently hates the comparisons with Best Buy. He insists that he would have made the changes essential at DSGi whether or not the monster from Minneapolis was breathing down his neck. However, the fact that he reinvented DSGi now of all times only adds to the respect he has built up among his peers in the industry.
