The highly likeable Baker had been keeping his head down since making a small fortune when Boots - of which he was chief executive - was sold to Stefano Pessina (11) and KKR in 2007. So it was a big surprise when he emerged as the new chairman of DFS as Advent International swooped to buy the business. Few could be better equipped to fill Lord Kirkham’s shoes than Baker.
