Wilkinson is the real heir to Woolworths’ position on the high street and while it remains a family controlled business, Mitchell is the man driving the growth of the intensely private Worksop-based company. Mitchell joined from drugstore chain AS Watson in September 2006, but spent most of his career at Sainsbury’s, joining as a trainee, before moving on to hold a variety of roles and rising to the top job as managing director in 2003.
