High street optician Specsavers has developed a health care app that allows customers to use their smartphone to test their sight.

The free-to-download Specsavers Sight Check app consists of a series of tests to check eye health. Should the app perceive a problem, the customer is instructed to book an eye examination at the closest Specsavers store. The app features GPS technology so that it can display the store nearest to the customer, or allows them to search for a store by postcode.
The app also has a pared-down version of Specsavers’ existing eye health advice tool, Ask the Optician. Users can type in a question relating to eye health and the tool searches a database before delivering the answer via text or video format.

While the app is not transactional, it does provide a compelling reason to download it: the test is useful. It will also allow Specsavers to build positive sentiment and brand awareness with potential customers. The app is similar to one released by Boots last year.
