Staples has improved the accuracy and speed of audits through automating this system to fight shrinkage and improve corporate compliance.

The retailer implemented Checkpoint Systems’ CheckPro Auditor™ software in the UK to move away from its paper-based auditing system after it proved successful in the US . After a pilot in UK last year, the system was fully implemented in June this year.

The web-hosted application can run on Blackberrys, allowing Staples staff to collect and receive data on the move. Staff at head office can upload audit results, action plans and success scoring are automatically created and shared with relevant people in the business moments after the completion of the audit. Staff on the ground can also send relevant images from their Blackberry relating to a particular problem over to head office straight away.

Staples loss prevention manager Paul Hancox said: “The system identifies loss prevention problem areas and allows us to take early action to correct them before they have a major impact on the business. The project has been such a success that we are now in discussions with Checkpoint Systems about increasing the number of licences we currently own.”

The audits in the UK running on the system are ones related to loss prevention for the time being, but the aim is to roll it out across to other departments.

In the US, Staples runs 18,000 audits a year through the system.
