Designed by CADA and Republica, Danish Coop’s Central Station store in Copenhagen brings a Corinthian flourish to convenience retail.

The best design frequently takes what’s already there and improves upon it. This is certainly the case in the recently opened Danish Coop in Copenhagen’s Central Station.

The station itself is a very grand mix of the classical and gothic, but CADA Design, working with Danish agency Republica, have worked hard to create an interior that uses light, graphics and simple black metal fixturing with brass-coloured connections, to make a good thing better.

The fixtures, to an extent, mirror the dark marble pillars with their gold-painted Corinthian capitals, while the plain wood plank flooring and graphics that take black and white as their key colours, succeed in promoting an honest feel to the interior.

This is travel retail and is therefore a convenience store, but the experience is rather more that of a deli than a grab-and-go emporium.

A strong emphasis has been placed on organic produce, in keeping perhaps with Denmark’s wholesome reputation and the white neon lighting ensures that this is as much about feeding the eye as the stomach.
