When shopping centre goliaths Westfield and Hammerson joined forces in 2013 to create a new £1.4bn mega-mall in Croydon, people in the borough rejoiced. No longer would it be an overlooked satellite town of London.

Six years later, construction has yet to start, the scheme is “under review” and footfall is dwindling.

Retail Week visited Croydon to find out what the delays to the shopping centre that was meant to be a “catalyst for regeneration” means for the town and its traders.
