Zara opens a “global flagship” on New York’s Fifth Avenue tomorrow (March 15th 2012).
Located at 666 Fifth Avenue, this is the modernist building that formerly housed the NBA store and which Zara has been working on since 2010.
The three-floor store, which has 32,000 sq ft of selling space, has kids and womenswear in the basement, further women’s collections on ground and menswear on the first floor. Andrés Conde, a director at Elsa Urquijo, the architectural practice that worked on the project, said that the building’s listed status had meant that creating a first floor with sufficient height had been a struggle.
The shop is notable for its use of “white cube” merchandise areas for each department and for the 1940s-style staircase that takes shoppers up to the first floor. Efforts have also been made to create a ‘clean’ interior with air-conditioning and electrical elements all concealed from view.
Capsule collections that are unique to the store have been included as part of the offer.
