Pringle is one of those curious brands that is probably rather more popular overseas than in its homeland, although there is still a certain cachet in wearing a jumper with a small lion on the chest for a particular demographic.
The brand’s strength in foreign markets, especially Far Eastern ones, is reinforced by the opening of its latest store in The Landmark, a shopping and office development in Hong Kong.
The 2,000 sq ft branch has a store concept that has been inspired by the retailer’s Scottish borders roots, according to Pringle, and the interior features a series of tree branch columns that are supposed to mimic the “wild, rugged Scottish landscape”. It is also claimed that the store carries a palette of “natural rustic materials inspired by the textures of Scottish landscapes”. The elements do succeed in adding considerable interest to an interior that might otherwise run the risk of looking a little over-slick, although slick remains a standard and is popular in the Far East.
And as well as the knitwear, with which the brand is usually associated in this country, the store is also home to the brand’s runway collections, making this potentially something of a one-stop Pringle shop.
Also worth noting is the long external window, the floor of which appears to form an almost integrated piece with the mall that contains it. Like the interior columns, the backdrop to this features what might appear to be coloured wool fibres that have been blown-up and back-lit. The effect is dramatic and although somewhat abstract in form, it works well as a brand messenger.
