With pet ownership now higher than ever post-pandemic, Walmart has made its first play into pet services with a new centre in Dallas, Georgia.

The retail giant described the pilot as an attempt to increase “affordable access to much-needed pet services” at a time when its customers are feeling the burden of heightened costs associated with looking after their animals.

A Walmart spokesperson said: “We know that pet services are essential for pet parents but for many, the experience can be costly and disjointed.

“At Walmart, we have an opportunity to help our customers save precious money, time and effort by offering a destination for pet services at the same place they purchase their pet food and supplies.”

The centre promises low, transparent pricing for key pet services in a central location within a dedicated storefront, on par with the value its shoppers are familiar with in its grocery stores.

Services include routine veterinary care like vaccines, wellness exams and minor medical services performed by qualified vets in collaboration with PetIQ.

There is a selection of grooming services available including baths, nail trims, teeth cleaning, ear cleaning and basic hair trims. Shoppers also have the option of taking their dogs through the self-serve washing station.
