Lighting that makes your retail space sparkle need no longer cost the earth as it has never been easier moving to sustainable, low impact lighting solutions

Typical Retail Energy Consumption

Unique. Inviting. Enticing. Interactive. New… Some of the many ingredients that make for a successful formula in retail. And now there’s another ingredient that can make its special contribution to your retail formula: achieving more while using less. Increasing awareness, corporate social responsibility and legislation means reducing carbon dioxide emissions is rising to the top of the retail agenda.

Standing out from the crowd no longer has to cost the Earth. An efficient, well designed lighting solution is a triple win: create the optimal retail environment while reducing electricity costs and carbon dioxide emissions. High efficiency lighting and modern light sources such as LEDs are the most visible ways to demonstrate concern for the environment.

Energy efficient lighting systems also create benefits that are sometimes not immediately obvious. For example, by managing your store lighting so that it’s only in use when it’s needed, less heat is generated. Less air conditioning is required - an overall reduction in use means reduced energy consumption a smaller energy bill and a greener carbon footprint.

Behind the scenes, lighting controls ensure the correct level of light is

provided for the environment required. We understand the importance of getting your lighting right; driving traffic into your stores, creating clear navigation, setting an ambience that determines the dwelling time and shopping pace, setting products in the very best light.

Philips also knows that up to 75% of a conventional lighting bill is a wasted cost - money spent on light that simply isn’t needed. By switching to an intelligent lighting system that applies the correct level of light as required, you can move to a sustainable, low impact lighting solution that helps you meet carbon emissions targets, legislation requirements and will dramatically reduce your expenditure.

The CRC EES (Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme) is the latest regulatory incentive designed to accelerate energy efficiency to the top of a company’s management agenda. Obligated members of the scheme must record and monitor their CO2 emissions, but also purchase allowances equivalent to their annual emissions.

At the time of print it is estimated the allowances will be priced at £12/tonne CO2 emitted, this will add between 5% and 10% to the energy costs of an obligated organisation. For a typical supermarket with annual electricity bill of about £90,000 the CRC would add an additional £6,000 to the energy costs.

As well as the financial incentive to reduce consumption, an annually published league table, showing the comparative performance of all participants will create an additional reputational incentive and create additional brand value.

Improving your lighting is one of the easiest ways to reduce the impact of the CRC EES scheme for your organisation. In a typical non-food retailer, lighting can account for as much as 38% of the energy costs.

There are three steps to successful energy management;

• The first step is to assess and measure your current energy consumption. It is essential to have a clear understanding of the energy use and carbon footprint of the building before investing in energy saving initiatives.

• The second step is to build a solution around your business objectives and day-to-day trading requirements that saves energy without compromising on light quality and customer experience.

• The final stage in energy management is to monitor your savings and to communicate your success. Savings made in energy are often a feature of a company’s sustainability statement and annual report.

Philips is currently working with customers positioned at various stages of the energy management journey and would love to work with you to understand where you want to be and how we can light the way to get you there.
