Nick Jones, the founder of famous members’ club Soho House, is behind a new retail venture, Corner Shop, which has just made its debut in London.
Corner Shop combines retail and hospitality, pitching itself as a grocer, baker, cafe and wine bar. It has just opened on the north bank of the Thames just off the Strand.
The upscale business includes an in-store bakery and products from independent specialist e5 Bakehouse, and dining areas where freshly prepared and seasonal food is available from a frequently changing menu.
The shop sells own-label product, such as granola, alongside lines from other businesses such as famous London Jewish deli Panzer’s and Akira sushi.
In the winebar, an atmosphere of conviviality is encouraged by tabletop signs asking customers not to use their laptops.
Corner Shop’s location is likely to draw footfall from affluent customers. It is neighbour to creative business based in 180 Studios – which is also home to a club operated by Soho House – as well as to restuarants such as Ikoyi. The area also draws high footfall through its closeness to Somerset House, which stages high-profile exhibitions and events.
The store has double height ceiling and large windows looking onto Embankment. Corner Shop was developed by Jones along with retail entrepreneur Alex Eagle and property tycoon Mark Wadhwa. The store was designed by Eagle & Hodges.
