Ikea has opened a downsized store in Queens, New York, with a focus on the needs of its local customer base.
Measuring half the size of an average Ikea store at 115,000 sq ft, the smaller-format store is one of many that Ikea is planning to roll out over the next year.
Located in Rego Center shopping mall, the Ikea store features a full range of products with a particular focus on space-saving solutions.
Both the room sets and digital tools on display are geared towards the typically small apartments of New Yorkers.
Shoppers at the store are able to take away small furnishings and accessories tailored towards city living, while bigger items are available for delivery across the city for a flat rate of $49.
Ikea has also installed self-service checkout machines and customers are able to book appointments with staff to plan kitchens, living rooms and bedrooms.
As part of its commitment to sustainability, Ikea has pledged to ensure all deliveries in New York City are carried out by electric vehicles by the end of January 2021.
Ikea US president and chief sustainability officer Javier Quiñones said: “At Ikea we’re on a journey to transform our business to meet our customers wherever they are and however they like to shop.
“As life at home has taken on a new meaning this year for so many people, our customers’ needs and behaviours are changing too, and we hope our new Queens store will serve as a convenient and accessible source of inspiration and home furnishing expertise for New Yorkers.”
