In theory, the internet should enable a global retail market. In practice, of course, the cost and complexity of international payments and fulfilment logistics have limited cross-border retailing.

The challenges for UK shoppers of snaring an exchange-rate bargain via a US website can be a particular headache, with US etailers often unwilling to accept overseas credit cards or to ship goods abroad. Even if these hurdles can be overcome, the customer still faces unpredictable customs and VAT charges.

Bundlebox, a company led by a former Google executive, offers a potential solution. Its customers receive a US address to receive their US etail orders. After receiving the shipments at its US address, Bundlebox consolidates multiple purchases – repacking them where necessary – before sending them on to the UK for delivery within seven days.

The site also handles any customs duty and VAT charges, and offers additional services, including carbon offsetting and insurance. Where necessary, it will also act as an intermediary for payment with a US credit card.
