The John Lewis Partnership’s 70,000 staff will this year receive a bonus equivalent to nearly seven weeks' pay, the company revealed in its stores on Wednesday morning.

The bonus, equal to 13 per cent of basic salary, is paid to every partner of the employee-owned business. The windfall was unveiled in John Lewis and Waitrose stores as the retailer announced its full-year results.

In the John Lewis flagship on London’s Oxford Street, staff cheered as Paul Thomas, who has been with the company for 24 years — including two decades in the floor coverings department — helped the store’s managing director Noel Saunders reveal the figure in the atrium.

Although higher than the 12 per cent anticipated by many staff, the 13 per cent bonus was down from the record 20 per cent payout John Lewis staff enjoyed in 2008 — a reflection of the 18 per cent drop in profits reported by the retailer.
